Happy New Years!! National Clay Week would like to wish each and everyone of you the best in 2018! Thank you for being part of helping us celebrate clay for the past two years, we are so looking forward to what 2018 holds. Cheers!
We dipped our toes into the world of ceramics and industry during National Clay Week 2016 and 2017 when we took a virtual tour of Standard Ceramic Manufacturing facility, toured West Virginia University’s Production Studios with live demonstrations, partnered with dinnerware manufacturer Clementine Porcelain and talked to artists working with The Pottery Studio in Jingdezhen, the porcelain production capital of the world in China. This year we want to take the full plunge. We are happy to announce that National Clay Week 2018 theme is INDUSTRY!
This fall Amanda Barr, NCW’s social media coordinator, had the opportunity to tour the Wedgwood and Bernardaud production factories in England and France on a research trip. At the Museé National Adrien Dubouché in Limoges, France, there was an enormous display of all of the industrial uses of ceramics- from medicine, technology, household appliances, to aeronautics. You could get a ceramic hip replacement. There are ceramic parts in your phone, hair appliances, heater, kitchen knives, car, the list goes on and on. The job opportunities outside of what we might think of as mainstream ceramic jobs are worth noting too. In the dental industry a colleague is making dental apparatuses, molds, and equipment. There are opportunities in ceramic materials and engineering both at the industry level and teaching at the university. The automobile industry hires model makers. Across the United States there are several small industrial tile manufacturers that both mold and model tile designs, and formulate new glazes.
We can’t tell you yet exactly what events will be part of National Clay Week 2018: Industry, but we can tell you it will open a whole new part of the ceramics world outside of studio arts. And maybe inside of studio arts with industrial techniques you can apply! Stay tuned for more details.
